Colic: What's All The Fuss About?

By Dr. Bryant Harris

Feeling Frustrated?

Why won’t my baby STOP CRYING?!?!

For parents, there might not be anything more painful than listening to your baby cry (endlessly), especially when you have done EVERYTHING in your power to comfort, nurture, and love them.

Not only is the crying killing you, but how about the lack of sleep?!?

Staying up with a baby that just won’t settle can be one of the worst experiences in life. The day after kiss your focus and concentration goodbye. Don’t let anyone say the wrong thing cause you fuse might be extremely short. You don’t mean to be that way, but you can’t help it…YOU’RE EXHAUSTED!

Now, imagine how much life would be if they could just STOP CRYING!

Imagine what it would feel to be confident that your baby is happy, giving you the strength and energy to take on the day.

Thankfully, current research shows there may finally be some solutions.

Many first time moms believe that their baby may have colic because of the perception of crying (although it’s normal for your little one to cry for a few hours each day_.

Unfortunately, crying is your baby’s only communicating when they are hungry, cold, in pain, sick or need a diaper change.

Colic is generally determined by the “rule of three” when violent crying takes place for:

· more than 3 hours per day

· more than 3 days per week

· more than 3 weeks

Based on this, it is estimated that the number of babies that experience colic is anywhere between 20 to 39%

Sadly enough, there is no true consensus as to what causes colic. ::womp womp::

But, there are strong relationships that exist with those babies that suffer from colic…

Here’s an abbreviated list of the “causes of colic”:

· excess gas

· food allergies

· immature digestive tract

· constipation

· hypersensitivity/over-stimulation to light and noise

· an underdeveloped nervous system

If we group the list by categories, we have two major areas:

1. Digestive System

2. Nerve System

1. Breast milk

I understand and sympathize if you are unable to breastfeed your child.

Formula does little to provide your child with the necessary nutrients they need while providing too much sugar and inflammatory ingredients, both of which can cause and contribute to colic.

It is possible to make your own formula that can mimic breast milk and have less of a negative impact on your baby.

2. Probiotic

Giving your child a probiotic supplement will help their digestion. Healthy bacteria is vital to a healthy gut.

What many parents do not understand that chiropractors who focus on pediatric care can assist in ensuring that your baby’s nerve system is functioning optimally and help relieve them of their colicky symptoms.

Chiropractic care aims to address the tension affecting the central nerve system (the body’s master control system). A nerve system free of tension allows the body to function at its best thus improving the quality of that individual's life.

If you believe that your baby is expressing symptoms related to colic, we can help further identify if there is underlying nerve system tension that could be contributing to their distress.

At TruCentered Chiropractic Care, we use gentle and safe techniques to relieve nerve system tension affecting your infant.

Here is a British study assessing a corrective approach to chiropractic and how it helped babies with colic.

Here is another study showing that chiropractic has the best chance of ending colic forever.

I know what you’re thinking…

You might be saying to yourself “I’m terrified to bring my child to a chiropractor.”

We understand that. You’re not alone or crazy.

That’s why we begin with a complimentary consultation for every single patient that contacts our practice. Whether it be adult, child or infant, it’s important we understand your problem and explain in detail the examination procedure.

Whether it be colic or another condition, what do you have to lose? Except for those sleepless nights and exhausted days.
